The European astrometric satellite Gaia is mapping our Galaxy with
unprecedented accuracy. A first data release was published in September 2016,
based on 14 months of observations. We will describe the basic ideas of the
mission, the contents of the first release, and show some of the scientific
results. We will also discuss what can be expected from Gaia in the near future
and a bit beyond.
